Linea 4 – Tecnologie in neuroscienze e riabilitazione

La linea di ricerca 4 ha come finalità lo sviluppo di nuove tecnologie e metodi per lo studio dell’attività cerebrale in pazienti neurologici, e della loro riabilitazione.

Le attività innovative relative alle neuroscienze vengono portate avanti mediante la collaborazione con i Laboratori di Neuroimmagini e di Neurofisiologia.

Le attività innovative relative alla riabilitazione sono indirizzate allo sviluppo di hardware e software a supporto del recupero cognitivo e sensorimotorio.

Nello specifico, la Telemedicina permette di realizzare sistemi tecnologici per l’erogazione di servizi riabilitativi a distanza, dal teleconsulto alla teleriabilitazione.

Le attività vengono sviluppate con il supporto dei Laboratori di Neuroimmagini, Neurofisiologia e di Tecnologie Riabilitative, in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Neuroriabilitazione e le altre linee di ricerca dell’IRCCS.

In this project, we aim to improve the methods of fMRI, MEG and EEG data analysis, and to validate these methods on specific experimental protocols. The developed methods shall be validated in healthy subjects and patients. In particular, the possibility of using innovative methods based on brain imaging opens new perspectives for the diagnosis and prognosis of neurological and psychiatric diseases.

The aim of this project is to implement and activate a cognitive tele-rehabilitation system to provide assistance responding to the multiple and differentiated patient needs. The primary objective of the project is to promote continuity of care from the hospital to the patient’s home, avoiding early treatment interruptions or possible requests for inappropriate hospitalization. A further objective is to develop new exercises to integrate for the different cognitive domains. A comparison will also be made for the specific economic aspects (direct and indirect costs, individual and overall short and medium-term savings) of the treatment provided by tele-rehabilitation, comparing it, with the same hours provided, with the corresponding economic items related to the conventional treatment.

This project aims to create and activate a tele-rehabilitation system capable of responding to the multiple and differentiated rehabilitation needs of home users. We will verify: the impact in terms of ease of use and real use; the socio-economic impact intended as a reduction of the cost / benefit imbalance; the possibility of proceeding with early discharge guaranteeing the continuation of treatments and assistance.

The effectiveness of neuromotor tele-rehabilitation is known and studied but there are no studies on integrated tele-treatment, including neuromotor, speech therapy and cognitive treatments, delivered together. Another aspect that has not yet been investigated is the cost / benefit analysis related to tele-rehabilitation.

It is known that speech and language treatment can be very lengthy, so it has been decided to create a software that can allow continuation of language treatment in patient¿s home, by using a Virtual Reality Rehabilitation System (VRRS- so called telerehabilitation). This new design will help to familiarize users with new technology, and to provide opportunity to gain better outcomes, taking advantage from the opportunities provided by technology and the possibilities usable during treatment (p.e. interaction with touch screen and writing on a paper have the same characteristics).
